Improving simulations of fine dust surface concentrations over the western United States by optimizing the particle size distribution

چکیده
[1] To improve estimates of remote contributions of dust to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the western United States, new dust particle size distributions (PSDs) based upon scale-invariant fragmentation theory (Kok_PSD) with constraints from in situ measurements (IMP_PSD) are implemented in a chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem). Compared to initial simulations, this leads to reductions in the mass of emitted dust particles with radii <1.8 mm by 40%–60%. Consequently, the root-mean-square error in simulated fine dust concentrations compared to springtime surface observations in the western United States is reduced by 67%–81%. The ratio of simulated fine to coarse PM mass is also improved, which is not achievable by reductions in total dust emissions. The IMP_PSD best represents the PSD of dust transported from remote sources and reduces modeled PM2.5 concentrations up to 5 mg/m over the western United States, which is important when considering sources contributing to nonattainment of air quality standards. The impact of transpacific transport of mineral dust in the United States
We use a global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) to estimate the impact of transpacific transport of mineral dust on aerosol concentrations in North America during 2001. We have implemented two dust mobilization schemes in the model (GOCART and DEAD) and find that the best simulation of North American surface observations with GEOSChem is achieved by combining the topographic source used in...
متن کاملNumerical and Synoptic Study of Emission, Transport and Identify Potential Sources of a Severe Dust Storm Over Middle East
One of the powerful tools in dust storms analysis that have recently found extensive application is atmospheric-chemistry numerical modeling. Spatial and temporal distribution of Middle Eastern dust for a severe dust event during 4-8 July 2009 was analyzed by Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry (WRF/Chem) model simulations and remote sensing observations. The HYSPLIT model is applie...
متن کاملHow different source regions across the Middle East change aerosol and dust particle characteristics
A major question is whether different source regions across the Middle East account for changes in aerosol and dust particle characteristics, which impact Western Iran. Therefore, over a period of sampling from April 2017 to April 2018, dust particles were collected in Western Iran from different cities including Urmia, Sanandaj, Sare-Pole-Zahab, Dehloran and Abadan. The research aim is to comp...
متن کاملEffect of lichen biological soil crusts on soil properties derived from early Holocene sandy sediments
Introduction: Biological soil crusts are a community of cyanobacteria, fungi, lichens, and mosses and play key roles in arid and semi-arid regions including carbon and nitrogen accumulation, soil fertility, dust capture, soil conservation and stability. Recent studies show that the formation of biological soil crusts on mobile dunes areas is extremely difficult due to low vegetation cover, st...
متن کاملAn Assessment of Wind Erosion Schemes in Dust Emission Simulations over the Middle East
Extended abstract 1- INTRODUCTION Atmospheric aerosols, solid and liquid particles in the atmosphere, play a crucial role in the atmospheric radiation equilibrium. These particles have an influence on the scattering and absorption of short wavelength radiation, and on the other hand, affect radiation absorption and emission in long wavelengths. Dust particles are among the importan...
